Rape Awareness at the University of Alberta
In 2012 the federal government’s Status of Women Canada funded a number of projects across Canada addressing violence against women on university and college campuses. One of these is the University of Alberta Students’ Union’s Gender Based Violence Prevention Project, which has come out with a series of posters to help raise awareness of rape culture on campus. The Resisting Rape Culture Series is an effective tool, and I would like to see other universities in Canada following the University of Alberta’s lead.
trigger warning: breakfast
Recently, in the world of higher education, there has been a lively debate about the reasonableness of including trigger warnings on course syllabi. There is a very good article on what’s wrong with this idea at Inside Higher Ed (see also Salon, The New York Times, The Atlantic, New York Magazine, Mother Jones, and Jezebel). In fact, the Inside Higher Ed review of One Hour in Paris is framed around this debate. Well, there is a moving and brilliant comic strip about rape on The Nib that comes with its own trigger warning: breakfast. It is gorgeous and powerful.
